Individualized Social Skills Services

Individuals in the HCS/TxHmL program can attend the provider of individualized social skills services in Texas of their choice.

In that program, individuals are able to enjoy leisure and recreational activities to promote community participation. This program assists individuals in acquiring, retaining, and improving self-help, socialization, and adaptive skills necessary to reside successfully in the community.

Types of Individualized Skills & Socialization
In the DBMD, HCS, and TxHmL programs:

  • On-site
  • Off-site
  • In-home ( HCS and TxHmL only)

On-site Activities Include (but are not limited to) :

  • Safely using a Stove, Oven, and Dishwasher
  • Food Safety & Meal Planning Following Recipes
  • Washing and Drying Clothes
  • Money Management Recognizing Coins & Paper Money
  • Making Change Writing Checks & Making Bank Deposits
  • Health & Hygiene Personal Grooming
  • Brushing teeth Hair & Skin Care
  • Hand Washing
  • Daily Exercise
  • Walking & Jogging
  • Yoga & Dancing
  • Resistance & Weight Training
  • Managing Emotions & Mental Health
  • Counting on One’s Self
  • Choosing Kind Words & Actions
  • Taking Medication Sleep & Relaxation Techniques

Off-site Activities Include (but are not limited to) :

  • Libraries
  • Restaurants
  • Malls
  • Stores
  • Aquarium
  • Bowling
  • The Zoo
  • Morgan’s Wonderland
  • Senior Centers
  • Coffee Shops
  • Museums
  • Volunteer Opportunities around 

Criteria for In-Home Individualized Skills & Socialization

One of the following criteria must be met:
  • Physician documents that the individual’s medical condition(s) justifies the need for in a home
  • Licensed professional or behavioral support service provider documents that the individual’s behavioral issue(s) justify the need for in a home
  • The individual is 55 years or older and requests to receive in-home

Provision of In-Home Individualized Skills & Socialization

  • HCS and TxHmL Program providers must ensure that in-home is provided in the residence of the individual
  • In-home is not required to be provided by an Individualized Skills and Socialization provider

ISS is a support service that helps individuals develop skills related to self-care, communication, socialization, and community participation. These services aim to increase independence and improve the quality of life.
On-site ISS takes place in a structured environment and focuses on personal development and daily living skills. Off-site ISS occurs in community settings and emphasizes integration, real-world experiences, and building independence outside the home.
Individuals may qualify if they have a medical or behavioral condition documented by a physician or licensed professional. Additionally, individuals aged 55 or older may request in-home services based on age alone.
Yes. ISS includes transportation between on-site locations, from on-site to off-site locations, and between off-site settings, depending on the type of service being provided.
Yes. ISS can include assistance with personal care tasks and support with medication administration as directed by a Registered Nurse, especially for individuals unable to manage these needs independently.
